How to Use the McClellan Oscillator
The McClellan Oscillator is a breadth indicator that is based on the advancing and declining issues (stocks) and is calculated in a way similar to MACD. Like the MACD, the McClellan Oscillator is considered to be a momentum indicator and can be used in the same way as MACD.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) McClellan Oscillator is used to generate Buy/Sell signals by attempting to anticipate Bullish and Bearish changes in the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI)Advance/Decline statistics.
There are two common ways in Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) technical analysis to interpret the DJIMcClellan Oscillator:
- Crossovers of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) and the zero line - A crossing of the McClellan Oscillator up through zero is interpreted as bullish and can be used as a "Buy signal. Conversely, a crossing of the zero line by the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) McClellan Oscillator on its way down is considered as a bearish sign and can be used as an Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) "Sell" signal.
- Divergence of the price and the McClellan Oscillator - When the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) security price trend diverges from the McClellan Oscillator trend, it signals a weakening of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) current trend and heralds possible coming changes in the current trend.
