About S&P 500 Index (^SPX) Quotes.

Open-high-low-close S&P 500 Index (^SPX) quotes (also OHLC quotes) are typically used to illustrate movements in the price of the S&P 500 over time. Open-high-low-close quotes are represented on a chart by bars (bar charts). Each vertical line on the chart shows the price range (the highest and lowest prices).

Open-high-low-close S&P 500 quotes are used in technical analysis to build price-based S&P 500 indicators. The majority of the S&P 500 technical studies are based on the close price of the S&P 500 (Moving Average, MACD, RSI, TRIX, etc.). Still, there are a number of important technical indicators (especially volatility indicators) that use open, high and low quotes. Some technical analysts prefer to use typical price instead of close price (quote). The typical price is simply calculated as the average of high, low and close quotes.
